Do Cookie Sprinkles Melt in the Oven?

My sister asked, “Do cookie sprinkles melt in the oven?” She didn’t think they would stick after baking unless the treats were frosted. The spritz variety is much better with jimmies. She also asked, “How do you get cookie sprinkles to stick?” I wasn’t quite ready for Saturday morning baking questions, but I wanted to help her out. I had to turn to Google for the information, but it was useless. Half said to add sprinkles before baking and the rest said they would melt. If I wanted to know the answer I’d have to try it myself.

Do Cookie Sprinkles Melt in the Oven?

So, do you add cookie sprinkles before or after baking? I was about to find out whether or not they would melt in the oven. To find out for certain I baked a batch of spritz cookies and tried various ways to add sprinkles. I figured they would melt since they’re soft and waxy. If didn’t matter to me since they would taste the same either way. I could always say I wanted them to melt and call them unicorn poop!

Do Cookie Sprinkles Melt in the Oven or Not?

I baked a partial batch of spritz butter cookies with colored jimmies. The bits on the baking sheet melted, but thankfully after cooling they were easy to pick off. The jimmies on the cookies melted ever so slightly, but they didn’t lose their shape. Maybe some brands would but these didn’t. I advise baking a few with jimmies before baking a whole batch. I still had to find out how to make sprinkles stick to cookies because most were on the tray.

How to Get Sprinkles to Stick to Raw Cookie Dough

Do cookie sprinkles melt in the oven? The short answer is no, but they weren’t sticking either. Applying sprinkles to cookie dough isn’t a fast process. You can’t just shake them onto raw dough as you would if they were baked, cooled, and frosted. I poured a fair amount into a measuring cup and applied them a little at a time by pressing very slightly. Some still fell off, and I had to find the best way to get cookie sprinkles to stick. The butter cookies in the grocery store bakery section were completely covered with jimmies. They obviously hadn’t been placed one by one. They were slightly melted like mine, but I could tell they were firmly attached.

How do you get sprinkles to stick to cookie dough? Use a light spritzing of simple syrup made with 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of sugar before applying jimmies. If necessary apply a little pressure with your hand. No, your cookies won’t retain details if that’s what it takes, but these are the best ways to get sprinkles to stick to cookies before baking.
