How Hills Bros Coffee Tastes Compared to Maxwell House

Are you wondering how Hills Bros coffee tastes compared to Maxwell House? I’ve been trying various brands in an attempt to find the cheapest best tasting brew, and I’ve narrowed it down to one. Is it good to the last dribble, or should I run for the hills? Both are twisted slogans, but only one deserves a four-star rating. In my opinion, the other doesn’t deserve a rating at all.

Consider my personal taste test when selecting your cuppa Joe. Everyone has different preferences, so I urge you to try both yourself.

I Ran for the Hills!

How Hills Bros Coffee Tastes Compared to Maxwell House

My husband is a frugal guy, and instead of paying a few dollars more for coffee that we definitely like he picked up not one but two cans of Maxwell House. Lucky me! That’s the brand in the big blue can, and it’s supposed to be good to the last drop, hence their company slogan.

Upon opening the can I noticed a funky smell. It wasn’t limited to the dry grounds either. The brew smelled and tasted even worse! The taste of Maxwell House coffee was BAD to the last drop.

I Temporarily Switched to Instant

I didn’t think that my husband would throw away his bargain brew. I bought a jar of instant from Aldi for myself. It wasn’t very good, but it was better than going to funky town every morning. That blue canned stuff made me want to throw up! I could tolerate the flavor of Aldi instant brew. It was okay to the last drop. It was nothing to write home about.

Halfway through the second blue can, my husband finally decided that he didn’t like it either. If my hubby wants to throw something out, it must be bad! I was relieved. He would have to buy something else, and hopefully he wouldn’t go cheap. That was my mistake. I was thinking again. He was still looking for a bargain. When it comes to money he can’t be fooled, and Folger’s didn’t fool him.

He Bought a Different Red Can – Oh, No!

We used to drink Folger’s, but a few months back they shrunk the can. Companies insult the intelligence of the consumer when they do that. Guess what Folger’s? I noticed! My husband did too, and he didn’t fall for your marketing plan. He bought Hills Bros instead.

Be afraid, be very afraid!

After my Maxwell House experience, I was genuinely afraid to try anything new. It was just as cheap or cheaper than the roasted crap in the big blue can, but I was surprised by the aroma. It didn’t smell bad. That gave me hope. If it didn’t smell bad, maybe it wouldn’t taste bad either.

The taste of Hills Bros coffee was surprisingly good. I think I like it better than Folger’s. It’s mild, and it’s somewhat flavorful. It doesn’t have a funky unidentifiable flavor like MH, and it’s still one of the cheapest ground coffee brands.

My Personal Rating

To sum up how Hills Bros coffee tastes compare to Maxwell House, I give HB 4 out of 5 measuring scoops. It’s still a cheap brew, but at least it’s good.

As far as MH goes, I give it -5 out of 5 possible measuring scoops. If the company wanted to send me a free one-year supply, I wouldn’t want it. It’s not even a good drain cleaner! That’s why it ended up in the garbage.

If you’re looking for a cheap but good ground coffee, try Hill’s Bros. It’s much better than the other cheaper brands.

Good post. Some times I will see a cheap, or generic coffee with a price I can’t pass up. If it is bad like your experience with MH I cut it 50/50 or less with a very good coffee. Maybe 3 bad scoops, and 5 good ones. You really won’t notice it. Right now we have a small bag of a dark gourmet coffee from a coffee shop, and I’m cutting that with MH. 2 0f the good stuff, and 4 MH on a 1/2 pot. Also try adding a pinch of salt to your brew. It really gives a smooth taste and takes the bitterness away.

Thanks, John. I wish I had thought of combining it with another variety. With coffee prices as high as they are it pays to shop the sales. Thanks for sharing that excellent tip.

I had that happen recently where a can of coffee was bad. The whole can tasted like it was burnt. BTW, it was Folger’s. As I like buying the flavored coffee’s. I won’t make that mistake again. I went to Aldi’s and picked up a can of their instant cappuccino. It tastes better, cost less, and more in a can.

@rusty2rusty – I’ve had Folgers that tasted burnt before too. I hate that. You can’t add enough cream to hide the terrible flavor. I’ll have to try Aldi’s cappuccino. Sounds like something I’d like. Do you ever drink it cold with ice and sweetener? I didn’t think I’d like it, but I love it.

Yeah, I haven’t been able to fix or get rid of the burnt taste. No matter what I have tried. I no longer buy Folgers because I have ran in that problem to many times.

Yes, at times I drink the cappuccino cold with ice. Other times I drink it hot. depending on the weather in my area. I do not have to add sweeten or anything. Just mix with water. As it is already sweetened. I tend to have a cup in the morning to bring my sugar levels back. When they decrease at night.

@rusty2rusty – I felt terrible today because I didn’t have my morning coffee. Sometimes it upsets my stomach and we had somewhere to go. Forgot all about it after getting home. No wonder I’ve been tired today. I’ve been dragging. I had cold iced coffee while cooking for my husband. I put a little cream in it and filled the glass the rest of the way with milk and a little artificial sweetener. That filled me up. Hopefully it wakes me up. I still don’t feel very good. It might be the weather too. I hurt when the weather is changing. It’s been damp and cold here, but since getting the prescription cream for my neck, I’ve felt so much better. I was miserable just about every day before that. It’s called compounding cream. I hadn’t heard of it before asking my pain dr. about it. It’s been like a miracle for me. Now, if only the coffee would kick in! 🙂

@marygoround – I’ve had that happen after drinking too much caffeine. It makes my heart flutter. That’s when I know I’ve had too much.
