Saving Catnip Plants Over Winter
I have a catnip plant that comes up each year, but by now only offshoot are still growing. I plan on saving them over the winter so they’ll have an earlier start in the spring. We usually get lots of snow and cold temps, and they can’t survive outdoors.
I’m going to have to dig them up and bring them inside soon. I’ll have to find a good place since my cat Panda Bear will surely smell it. He’s demanding enough as it is. He stands by the back screen door and meows for me to get him some.
My roommate’s cat Baby could care less. She goes outside in the mornings, and she could get all that she wants. There’s nothing to stop her, but she’s not nearly as interested. Hopefully it will continue growing in the house and I’ll be able to satisfy my cat’s craving all winter long.

Transplanting it to a Pot of Rich Organic Soil
I have potting soil and ceramic planters on hand. Tomorrow I’m going to use one of my garden spades to dig up a couple of healthy looking plants. I won’t be to tell if they come in with insects in the soil, at least not right away. If outdoor foliage is still alive, you can bet that bugs are too. I’ll have to keep an eye out for that. If it’s a problem, I’ll use sticky traps.
The article entitled Best Natural | Kill Bugs Houseplants explains how they work. I had brought in a couple of flowering tropical vines, and I’ve had to watch for insect infestation. So far all that I found was a big inchworm. He’s back outside now, and the plants are doing fine.
Keeping it Out of Reach Will Be the Hardest Part
Transplanting the plants will be easy. The hardest part will be keeping my cat out of them. I’ll have to put them up high and in a place that he can’t reach. However, I’ll have to be able to water the catnip plants over the winter or they’ll end up dying. Maybe my corner shelf would be a good place. Saving them won’t be easy if I can’t provide water. Thankfully I’ve found a 32-ounce waterer that will reach!
@kimdalessandro that was awesome plan my friend good luck to you 🙂
