Should You Buy a Used Cat Tree?

So, should you buy a used cat tree? The thought crossed my mind while searching letgo for furniture. I found the one I wanted for less than half the retail price. I weighed the pros and cons and came to a decision, but not before talking to my kitty’s veterinarian. It didn’t look damaged or dirty, but after learning what could go wrong it wasn’t hard to decide. No amount of savings was worth the risk – unless of course you know the seller, and even then you may have problems. In the end it’s up to you to decide, but I had to pass it up to gain peace of mind.

It May Look Clean but…

The cat tree I found online looked brand new, and the seller said it was clean but was it really? I’m not talking about fur, dust, or dirty paw prints either. What I was worried about was cat urine. Felines that haven’t been fixed will mark their territory, and I had no way of knowing if it had ever been sprayed. I didn’t want that unmistakable horrible smell on anything in my home. Even if I couldn’t smell it my cat would, and he might do the same. Should you buy a used cat tree?¬†Unless you can check it with a UV flashlight in a dark location you have no way of knowing if it’s urine stained or not.

Even if it’s Odor-Free and Clean it May Have…

My cat’s vet suggested another potential problem, and it was one I hadn’t thought of after asking, “Is okay to buy used cat furniture?” Another problem would be just as bad if not worse. Not everyone uses flea control, and the carpet on a cat tree could hold countless eggs and larvae. Sure, you could buy an enzyme cleaner for pet urine stains, but you may not notice fleas until you’re itching and scratching and your home is infested. A bargain cat tree could end up costing a small fortune.

Should You Buy a Used Cat Tree or Not?

Is it okay to buy a used cat tree? It is if you know the seller and if you’re confident that it isn’t harboring fleas or urine odors. Buying from a stranger is out of the question no matter how cheap it is. I’d rather spend more and be certain beyond a shadow of a doubt that my cat’s furniture is clean and pest-free.
