Tips on Keeping Clumping Litter Clean
Use these tips on keeping clumping litter clean. If it isn’t working and the box still stinks you need to make a few simple changes –
I was using clumping litter from Aldi in my cat’s litter box. Two cats are sharing a single box. It works out fine, but I really should have a second pan. The problem, is I don’t have a good place to put another one. I have to be more diligent when it comes to cleanliness. I don’t want the house to smell bad, and I don’t want the cats to have to use a dirty litterbox.
Consider these tips on keeping clumping litter clean, and save money while providing your cat(s) with the best of everything. If your clumping litter is working, or if your litter box still smells bad, you might need to make a few changes. After my neck surgery, I went with a lighter weight option that works even better. I’ve added a video review for my readers. Be sure to watch. It’s less than a minute long.
Don’t Scoop Right Away
First of all, if your cat just used the litter box, don’t try to scoop it out immediately. It takes time for the liquid to form a bonded clump. Try to take it out too soon, and it will just fall apart. When the clumps fall apart, the filler will begin to stink. That’s because you’ll never be able to get all of those tiny urine-coated pieces. They’ll always slip between the sifter slats.
When looking for the best tips on keeping clumping litter clean, wait at least 30 minutes to an hour before attempting to scoop, unless of course it’s poo. In that case, you can scoop immediately. Also, are you using the right scoop? They’re not all the same. The Nature’s Miracle Non-Stick Antimicrobial Scoop & Caddy is ideal for clumping litter because it’s not much finer than typical clay varieties. These days most people use the clumping kind. Unless they state otherwise, most scoops in stores are still made for basic clay litter use. It doesn’t make sense, but they’re still incredibly cheap and not made for sifting fine particles.

Completely Empty the Pan Once Every Couple of Months
Cat litter companies also provide tips on keeping clumping litter clean, but they would have you believe that you have to completely dump the litter pan once every two weeks to a month. Of course they want you to do it often! They’ll sell more litter if you follow their directions and tips on keeping clumping litter clean! As you know, it takes at least 20 pounds of clumping litter to properly fill a pan and I’ve never dumped mine that often.

Try a New Brand of Litter
If you don’t like the way that it performs, try a new brand. I found a good review of Tidy Cat 24/7 Lightweight. I have neck and back problems, and I can’t lift the heavier jugs. Besides being easier to handle, it works extremely well. It doesn’t stink when used, and it forms compact clumps. Take a look at the short video review, and see what it looks like and how well it works. It’s the best review that I’ve found, and it’s super short and to the point.
Money-Saving Tips on Keeping Clumping Litter Clean
Don’t dump it entirely until you have trouble with odor control. I would advise doing it every couple of months. However, I’ve gone even longer. When seeking money-saving tips for keeping clumping litter clean, an entire change should depend on the condition of the litter. Little bits that fall through the cracks of the scoop are what cause odor and contamination. That results when scooping too soon, as previously mentioned. In any case, I always replace the same amount that I scoop out unless I plan on a complete change soon. In that case, I allow the level to go way down. When seeking tips on keeping clumping litter clean, go to those with cats instead of the companies that stand to gain.
Replace Your Litter Box Once a Year if it Still Stinks
When looking for tips on keeping clumping litter clean, this next tip is just as important as how often the filler is changed. Litter boxes are made from plastic. Whether it’s odor-controlling anti-microbial plastic or not, in time it’s going to absorb bad odors, and it’s going to permanently stink no matter how much you scrub it. Even the very best plastic litter box should be replaced once a year. Otherwise, the pan is going to stink no matter how often the filler is changed. When it seems that your clumping litter is no longer working or it stinks no matter what, it’s time for a total change out, litter pan and all.
Consider a Nature’s Miracle Litter Box
Nature’s Miracle Cat Litter Boxes are some of the very best, especially for the price. They’re made by the same company that makes the enzyme cleaner that I use for cleaning up pet stains and odors. Their boxes are phenomenal, and the prices are fair. They have a non-stick coating that prevents clumping litter from sticking and falling apart. As I said when too many clumps crumble, that’s when the bad odors start. Consider the oval box on the left or a unique corner model. You’ll see many on the list to choose from. They’re all fantastic pans.
Annually begin with a fresh box, and if you follow the aforementioned tips, it will remain odor-free and as clean as possible. Best of all, you won’t go broke buying clumping filler. However, if it isn’t clean enough for your cat he or she might start using others areas of the home. You certainly don’t want that to happen! If going outside of the litter box isn’t caused by a bladder infection or another medical condition it’s a hard habit to break.
