Ways to Stop a Birdbath from Freezing

Those who love birds feed and provide water all year round. They look for ways to stop a birdbath from freezing. After all, they can’t drink snow. They have a tough time when temps drop below zero. Food and water become nearly impossible to find, and some don’t survive. Simply providing a source of hydration can mean the difference between life and death to feathered visitors of every kind.

How to Prevent a Birdbath from Cracking in the Winter –

I’ve always loved watching birds, but I didn’t always provide seed and water all year round. It can become quite expensive, especially when you’re the only person that provides sustenance in the area. They will come from miles around, and they will learn to rely on your help. I didn’t want to let them down, and I stopped feeding them when spring arrived. I didn’t have a way to offer water year round since temperatures drop well below zero in Northwest Indiana. I didn’t know how to keep that from happening, and I removed the top. It was the only way that I knew how to prevent a birdbath from cracking in winter. I know how the birds have to fight to survive, and now I’m able to provide what they need all year long.

Beautiful Heated Birdbaths are Available –

Imagine how refreshing it must be for birds that find water in the dead of winter when their world is covered in ice and snow. It would have to seem like a heavenly oasis for cold and thirsty wild birds that want a liquid source of moisture. I’ve found good bird bath heaters, but high-quality heated birdbaths are much better. They flawlessly work to provide sustenance for birds of all kinds.

All of the Allied Precision heated birdbaths are wonderful. The baths pictured here are the ones I purchased, and the photos lead you to them. I’ve never had a problem with mine, and I’ve had them for two long cold winters.

Within the next two weeks I plan on setting them up again to replace my concrete one. Temperatures are supposed to begin dipping below freezing within the next few weeks. Winters are long in Northwest Indiana, and caring for the birds isn’t just an act of kindness. It’s also a form of entertainment for me. I’ll have my husband remove the concrete basin and tip it to prevent breakage.

Heated Bowls are Available for Balconies and Deck Rails  –

I also use a heated deck rail birdbath. It securely attaches to the top of the rail, and the electrical cord plugs in next to the back sliding door. All creatures that can reach it can enjoy a refreshing drink of liquid moisture. It has to beat pecking at ice and eating snow. The birds have been flocking to it.

As you can see from the photo, a variety of winter birds are enjoying the Allied Precision heated bird bath above. It has a super durable plastic bowl, and the bracket easily attaches to a deck rail with the included hardware. It also includes a pole for mounting in the yard or garden. The cord is 14″ long and clips beneath the bowl when heat isn’t necessary. It comes with a 3-year warranty.

With both of the aforementioned birdbaths, you just have to remember to fill check the water level each day. To work well in freezing conditions the basins must be shallow. They are more shallow than ordinary bird baths. The deeper the bowls, the more heat and power it would take to stop the water in the birdbath from freezing.
