Why Cats Zip through the House at Night

Wondering why cats zip through the house at night? When the sun goes down their energy level rises, and they start sprinting, yowling, jumping, and playing. They seem to prefer running in short bursts, and their antics keep people awake. You can tell when they’re getting ready to take off too! They crouch way down, rock back and forth as if they’re warming up their engine, and their pupils dilate to huge proportions. So, why do cats run like their furry butts are on fire? They sprint for reasons that make purrfect sense!

The Main Reason Why Cats Zip through the House at Night

Cats have a natural desire to hunt, even well-fed house cats that catch nothing more than moths and sky raisins, a.k.a. houseflies. So, why do cats run through the house at night? After all, they don’t usually catch feathered or fur-bearing prey indoors. When nighttime comes, instincts kick in and they practice sprinting as they would outside. They typically sneak up on prey and wait to attack until they’re close enough to pounce. It may look like nothing more than play, but it’s an important part of hunting practice.

The Secret Lives of Cats –

Not all sprints through the house are hunting related. Cats enjoy playing, and play is another reason why cats zip through the house at night. They’re pretty good at entertaining themselves! While I was healing from neck surgery I had to sleep in a recliner in the family room. I found out firsthand just how busy my two cats were at 3:00 a.m. They took turns chasing each other up and down the stairs at dizzying speeds. I didn’t even realize one of the cats played! She’s rather grumpy during daylight hours, and I thought she hated the other cat. Turns out they have a very active (and playful) nighttime relationship.

Another Reason Why Cats Experience the 3:00 A.M. Crazies

When figuring out why cats zip through the house at night I thought of one more solid reason. Another one of the main reasons why cats run through the house at lightning speed is because of pent-up energy. Indoor cats spend countless hours doing nothing more than lounging around, sleeping, and watching the world go by. They sleep much of the day and devote lots of time to grooming to remain scent-free. A cat’s reasons for zipping through the house are emotional as well as physical. My two cats are 11 years old, and even as seniors they thoroughly enjoy it.
